An Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds by Luke Stephenson

“I find these birds and the world surrounding them wonderfully fascinating.
To find my subjects I had to enter the world of the bird breeder. A dedicated group of individuals many of whom have been keeping birds their whole lives. This is a hobby of a close-knit community who you don’t generally come into contact with unless you are active within their world. I personally do not keep birds, but I find them to be beautiful in all their variations and colours they captivated me as a subject matter and I wanted to capture them in a way that would show them off at their best. There are many recognised criteria to breeding a prize-winning bird, from shape and form to its pattern. This is something I have tried to convey through my work. I also regard it as a priority of this series to encapsulate their personalities.” Luke Stephenson

Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, have built a see-through church in the Belgian region of Haspengouw. The church is a part of the Z-OUT project of Z33, house for contemporary art based in Hasselt, Belgium.
The design of the church is based on the architecture of the multitude of churches in the region, but through the use of horizontal plates, the concept of the traditional church is transformed into a transparent object of art.
The church is 10 meters high and is made of 100 layers and 2000 columns of steel. Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church is either perceived as a massive building or seems to dissolve – partly or entirely – in the landscape. On the other hand, looking at the landscape from within the church, the surrounding countryside is redefined by abstract lines.
